Who is the Better Student, Really?
Why does the good student have to be the student that sits quietly and always agrees? Shouldn’t the best student be the one that fights for their beliefs and has their own opinion and stands for something?
We students are people, we have opinions! But most teachers get upset when students disagree with them, or if students try to have a discussion with them on a topic in which they have different opinions! Shouldn’t students be encouraged to vocalize their opinion, to stand up for what they believe in, to stand for anything!
As it turns out most teachers favour girls, because girls are typically better at sitting quietly, attentively and agreeing through an hour and fifteen minute lesson. The fact is, is that I am not one of those students I am a student, who fidgets, gets bored, asks questions and will not blindly agree with the teacher. I am the student that will stand up to the teacher, stand up for my beliefs; I’ll get into a debate with a teacher or with another student or with anyone if it is on a topic I am truly passionate about.
Students need to be told it is ok to tell a teacher that they disagree without being worried about punishment as long as it is vocalized in a professional way; we are all human we all have brains and can think for ourselves. That is what makes this world so unique is that we can all think about one topic, but in the end have one hundred different opinions from one hundred different people, and that’s ok because that’s what you believe in; as long as you’re not telling someone else that their opinion is stupid and wrong and yours is right, you can think whatever you want!
We as students need to be taught how to articulate our thoughts, and how to stand up for what we believe in, in a professional way so that when we leave high school we can leave as informed adults who know how to make their own decisions on things that matter, like politics and voting and eventually in our careers!
High school is where we are supposed to be educated; shouldn’t we be educated on the things that truly matter?
